Universal Credit

Universal Credit

Universal Credit brings together the following benefits:

  • Income based job seekers allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Income Based employment support allowance
  • Child tax credits
  • Income support
  • Working tax credits

You will need to claim on line and will be paid once a month, in arrears and into your bank account.

You will need access the internet so that you can make the claim.   Money is not paid straight away so you will need to think about how you will manage financially until the benefit is paid.   You will need a bank account and you will need to remember that your housing benefit will be included in this universal payment.

Bromsgrove and Redditch District Council or bdht can help you to make the claim on-line and we can provide advice on how to budget for the weeks until the benefit is paid, give you advice on bank accounts and help you set up a direct debit so you can pay your rent on time.

Follow the latest DWP guidance on service charges and Universal Credit.

We would also recommend that you download our Universal Credit Guide.

What happens to your Universal Credit when you start work or work more hours?

The video from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will explain more.

What Universal Credit Benefit doesn’t include is Council Tax support – you will need to make a separate claim for this to your local council.

Universal Credit may not stop when you find work. Instead it will continue to be paid but could reduce as your paid income increases and will remain open for 6 months after your last payment of Universal Credit.  If your circumstances change within this 6 months you will NOT have to make a new claim.
