Equipment and adaptations

We want you to feel safe, comfortable and independent in your home.

If you’re finding everyday tasks more difficult, we may be able to help by providing equipment or making changes to your home to make things easier.

What we mean by equipment and adaptations

Equipment and adaptations are changes to your home that help you move around more safely and manage daily activities.

These can include:

Small changes (minor adaptations)

  • Grab rails
  • Lever taps
  • Handrails
  • Simple safety features

In many cases, our trained operatives can assess and install these quickly without needing a full assessment.

Larger changes (major adaptations)

  • Level access showers or wet rooms
  • Stairlifts
  • Ramps
  • Widened doorways

These will need an assessment from an NHS occupational therapist to make sure the right solution is in place. These adaptations will be undertaken by the Local Authorities Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) team, bdht will have to give permission for the works to go ahead.

How we support you

We’ll work with you to understand what you need and what will make the biggest difference to your day-to-day life.

We work closely with NHS occupational therapists who:

  • assess your needs
  • recommend suitable adaptations
  • help plan accessible homes for the future

We also work closely with local authorities and health services where needed, so you get the right support.

How to request an adaptation

The easiest way to get started is to:

  • log in to your mybdht account and request an adaptation
  • or contact us directly if you need help with this

We’ll then look at your request and let you know what happens next.

Depending on what you need, we may:

  • arrange a quick assessment for smaller changes
  • ask a NHS occupational therapist to carry out a full assessment for more complex adaptations

What happens next

Once we understand your needs, we’ll:

  1. Review the request
  2. Decide what type of support is needed
  3. Work with partners (if needed) to agree the best solution
  4. Arrange installation when everything is in place

We’ll keep you updated so you know what’s happening and what to expect.

Costs and funding

Some smaller adaptations can be completed quickly and at no cost to you.

For larger adaptations, we may work with your local council, who can assess your eligibility for funding or grants.

We’ll explain your options clearly so you can make informed decisions.
